The Importance of Lighting

The Importance of Lighting

One of the most important tools of a detailer is light. Not just any kind of light or more light but the right kind of light. What is light by the way? Light is defined as radiant energy. An electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye. It is responsible for our sense of sight. Light travels in waves and like any other wave it is subjected to reflection, refraction and diffraction. In the car detailing business, refection is a good thing which gives meaning to the term mirror shine, mirror finish and so on.

When the owners set up Carnauba in 2004, one of the first things that was considered for the operation floor was the right kind of light. Illumination was one thing but we wanted lights especially at the polishing bay that could detect and show defects such as swirl marks, holograms, light scratches and micro marring that diminishes the appearance of a car. Lumen was a term that we came to know over the years. Lumen is defined as a measurement of light that is visible to the human eye from a light source, therefor the higher the lumen the higher the brightness. The general rule was that if we can see it then we can remove it, unless if it was technically impossible.

Our polishing bays are illuminated by halogen flood lights up to 12,000 lm so that this general rule is complied. All the other factors such as product, skill, and tools would not be able to combine to produce an unblemished finish without the right kind of light.

I hope this article brings some illumination specifically to the importance of light in a detailing centre.
